Stress Less this Year!

Stress. It’s the one word that many of us focus on throughout our daily lives. In fact, 7 out of 10 adults are said to experience stress or anxiety every single day. However, did you know that 85% of the things we stress about don’t even happen! If you want to beat stress, and boost your health and wellbeing than you’ve come to the right place! Here at Love Organic Living, we’ve put together a few ways to do this. Firstly, let’s figure out where most of our stress comes from and how it affects our health.

Where does most of our stress come from?

Most studies have found that stress comes down to three things: money, work and the economy. Approximately 46% of adults have stated that they have had arguments with a spouse or friends because of monthly work-related stress. Notice anything about these statistics? They seem to revolve around work rather than things like spending time with family or living a healthy lifestyle.

Stress breakdown:

So let’s breakdown monetary stress by finding out what stresses us out at work. Most of the stress at work seems to come from having an overbearing workload, and a combination of people issues and juggling work and home life. The stress caused by work has become such an issue for people that more than half of men and women say that they will check their work email on family holidays like Christmas Day. While it is important to note that certain levels of stress can be healthy for the body, too much stress can have negative effects on your heart, sleep, digestion, weight, memory and skin.

So how can you beat stress?

In the workplace:

At work, during breaks it’s a good idea to take a walk to the nearest park or nature filled area. Walking in nature can reduce your mental fatigue and bring you into a less stressful and more positive state of mind. Another good idea for your breaks is to call a friend to take your mind off work. This social support will provide you with a good buffer for work related stress.

Fun stress release idea: Buy a potted plant like a cactus for your desk. Having a plant on the desktop in your workplace may lower stress and take away from the clinical feel of an office workplace.

Outside the workplace:

Here are the most common ways people to manage stress outside the workplace:

  • Listen to music
  • Go exercising or walking
  • Watch a movie
  • Read a book

While these are effective ways to manage stress outside the workplace, there are plenty more simple ways for you to manage stress.

Did you know that simply smiling can reduce the stress in your day? Smiling reduces the intensity of your body’s response to stress. Like smiling, laughing is also a great way to manage stress. Laughing cools your stress response and soothes tension in your body. To get more humour into your day, spend time with friends, listen to a stand-up podcast or hang up some comic strips in your office space.

Feeling rushed?

If you’re always feeling rushed another great way to help with your stress is to give your time to others by volunteering. Studies have shown that giving away your time to other people will make you feel as though you have more time. This is supported by evidence from author S.M Camgoz that suggests 78% of people who volunteered in 2014 said that it lowered their stress level overall.
